The Africa Youth Movement(AYM) retreat started on Thursday March 16th and lasted five days. My experience was a very life changing experience that I will never forget.
This gave me a chance to socialize with other youths even though I was the youngest. It also gave me a chance to talk about WREPA and all the amazing work we’ve done. I met a lot of people who were really inspired with the worked we have done and they wanted their organisations to work with us.
The retreat also gave me a chance to talk about important subjects that I was passionate about. For example, Gender Equality including the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender). It was hard discussing these issues as there were many people that didn’t have the same views as me. But what I learned is that I needed to understand were their views were coming from. Some of them didn’t support the LGBT because of their religion or their culture.
The AYM retreat also gave me a chance to connect with other Africans that had the same views as me regarding the issues Africa faces. It gave me a chance to fully express myself which is something I haven’t been able to do. It made me realise that my opinions and ideas do matter and they are just as important as everyone else’s. I will never take this experience/opportunity for granted and I’m very grateful to have attended this retreat.
